Social Security does not pay everyone on the same day. Your payment day depends on your birthday and on when you first started getting benefits. Here are the exact dates for December 2026 and January 2027, plus what to do if a payment does not show up.
December 2026 payment dates

All three dates come before Christmas, so there is no holiday delay this year.

The January payment is the first one with the 3.6% raise for 2027. If your check is $1,500 now, expect about $1,554 in January, before any change in your Medicare premium. The full year is on our 2027 payment calendar.
Who gets paid on the 3rd instead
Some people do not follow the birthday schedule. They get paid on the 3rd of every month. That is you if:
- You started getting Social Security before May 1997, or
- You get both Social Security and SSI, or
- You live outside the United States, or your state pays your Medicare premiums.
In December 2026, the 3rd falls on a Thursday, so that payment arrives on December 3.
When the 3rd lands on a weekend or holiday, the money comes on the last business day before it.
What about SSI?
Supplemental Security Income is paid on the 1st of the month. The December payment comes on Tuesday, December 1. The January 2027 payment comes early, on Thursday, December 31, 2026, because January 1 is a holiday. That means some SSI recipients get two payments in December and none in January. That is normal. It is not an extra payment.
Why your payment is “one month behind”
Social Security pays for the month before. The payment you get on December 16 is your benefit for November. That is why your first payment comes the month after the month you start. If you start benefits in March, your first payment comes in April.
A real example
Sam is a retired Texas teacher born on the 14th. He gets Social Security from earlier work and a TRS pension.

Knowing both dates helps Sam time his bills. His mortgage is due on the 1st, so he pays it from his TRS deposit at the end of the month.

If your payment does not arrive
- Wait three business days. Banks sometimes post deposits late in the day, or the next day.
- Check with your bank. Make sure your account number has not changed.
- Call Social Security. The number is 1-800-772-1213. You can also call your local office.
If you moved or changed banks, update your information in your my Social Security account at ssa.gov. Changes can take a month to take effect, so do it early.
Questions people ask
Can I change my payment day? No. Your day is set by your birthday, or by the 3rd-of-the-month rule.
Do married couples get paid on the same day? Not always. A spousal benefit is paid on the day set by the birthday of the person whose record it is based on.
Do paper checks come on the same day? Social Security pays almost everyone by direct deposit or a Direct Express debit card. Paper checks are rare now and take longer.
